Prairie Roots, Stones & Wood-fired Rolls

Prairie Roots: a pioneer’s life, living off what they could grow and find on their homestead, working hard to grow their families and set down roots in a brand new world. Stones: Hard, solid, a foundation to build a new life, and what they used to grind their grain into flour to feed their families. Wood-fire Rolls: Made from fresh ground grain to feed their hungry families.

On June 2, Fort Dauphin hosted a group of UK tour operators in conjunction with Travel Manitoba and Earth Rhythms. It was an amazing experience. While the rolls were baking in the Ukrainian style bake oven, our guests ground grain into flour using our quern stones, and made fresh butter using a glass paddle style butter churn. After, they enjoyed a Ukrainian inspired meal prepared by Joanna Cooper, and listened to the music and stories of our very own local Historian, Ed Stozek. Once the evening was over, they took the rolls, along with some local homemade jams and honey with them on to the next destination in their journey: Elkhorn Resort and Riding Mountain National Park.

A chance to try your hand at something new, plus good conversation, good food, good stories, good music all in a unique and beautiful setting: that’s what makes an experience!

Opening Day

May 23, 2010 1-4pm.

Help us celebrate another year by coming to the Fort for some old-fashioned family fun. The official opening ceremony is at 2pm.

Come and see the dancers, listen to the live music, and eat bannock in the Tipi. Wagon rides, kids games, fresh bread out of the old bake oven, and demonstrations will round out the afternoon. We would love to see you.

Paint the Town Red—do something the color of red, bake red cookies , wear red, play a game in red, paint red faces or whatever for the Canadian Olympics. Send a picture afterwards to tourism@dauphin.ca and a list of Dauphin’s activities will be sent to the Canadian Olympics committee to show Canada our community spirit.

Join us for a fun filled afternoon of voyageur style activiteis . There will be snow taffy, snowshoeing, arm wrestleing, a game of cat and mouse, wagon rides, and other activities for the whole family. Be sure to try a Beave Tail while you’re here. There is no charge for admission or to participate in the scheduled activities. There will be bannock in the tipi. The main building, Trading Post, Trapper’s Cabin, and Blacksmith Shop will all be open. There will be a concession set up for the day. Most activities are outdoors so please dress warm. Hope to see you there!

Opening Day/Pioneer Party May 23

It’s May and time for the Museum to officially open for the season. Come down to the Fort and enjoy an afternoon in a park like setting. Enjoy freshly baked bread from our clay oven. Enjoy entertainment provided by various local artists. Have an ice cream cone in the Trading Post.

Hughes House, our historic pioneer home. A step back in time to the first half of the 20th century.

All Saints Anglican Church. Our 100 year old church. Build in 1907 at Fork River and moved to Fort Dauphin in 1985.

Canoe-A-Thon June 6

The first Sunday in June is our annual Canoe-A-Thon fundraiser. Paddle twice around Moon Lake. We would love to see you on the lake! Come in costume. Would you like to participate? Call the Museum for more information.

Canada Day, July 1

Join us on July 1st for a Pancake Breakfast on the scenic grounds of the Museum. Pancakes are cooked fresh by Museum staff and volunteers. While you’re here for breakfast why not take a tour of the Museum. In the afternoon we will have hot dogs and hamburgers for sale. There will be games for the children. Canada Day goodies, such as flags and pins, will be available. Don’t forget the entertainment!

Admission is free.

Settlers to this area may have come across the prairies in a covered wagon similar to this one.

Garden Tours

Third week in July. Take a tour of some of Dauphin’s most beautiful gardens. Then back to the Fort for tea and biscuits. Tours meet at the museum at 6 pm and leave from there. Call the museum for more details. Tickets are limited so get yours early!

Street Fair, July 29
